BUILDING MATERIAL - PROJECT 2

MATERIALITY OF SPACE - AN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION

This is the second and also final assignment for this module. This is a group work that we need to choose a building and pay a site visit on it to collect the material data that is use by the building. We need to list out all the materials used by the building in our report and also how the materials contribute to certain space and also how does it affect the space.

It's interesting that we need to figure out what materials use in a building by our self. We take picture of different part of the building then we do research based on the characteristic and figure out what material is it. I've learn a lot of new materials that i never heard before. It's also interesting that I've learn about how certain materials contribute to the specific space/area. By choosing the right materials for the specific area is important because different materials have different feelings for people and  also different visual effect. I've also learn about combination of different materials can bring out another type of contrast for the building. Shapes and forms of the material can also lead out another visual effect that can attract peoples' interest.

BUILDING MATERIAL - PROJECT ONE

SOLID VS VOID - 'SHAPING LIGHT AND SPACE'

This assignment is all about solid and void. We were given certain shapes & forms and materials to form a model that have solid & void in it. The main reason for this assignment is to let us recognize how intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material become factors in design process. It's also want us to understand and able to express the material we use in it's contextual application.

I've chosen one solid type material, one semi-solid and one transparent material for my model. This assignment is similar to actual construction project because the material we choose have to related to it's own characteristic that apply in actual building. balsa wood, glass and wire mesh is my material. I've learn that solid and void is important in every single building because void is a place that is for people to interact. Glass represent the void that provide a spatial visual effect and also able the light to pass through. Relation between each material is also important in actual building. Different material have it's own characteristic that able to connect to the other material.

DESIGN STUDIO : PROJECT 3A & 3B

A : STORY TELLING & NARRATIVE: ' MY BUILDING, MY ARCHITECTURE '

This is a small project that give by our tutors. First we need to choose a building that located in Malaysia and pay a visit to it. This assignment is to create a short video that can explain the design & spatial concept and approach of the building and also how and why the building was designed.

The building that my group chosen is the PJ Trade Centre. It is a eco-friendly building. The design concept of this building is to reduce the usage of energy and make it more eco-friendly to the nature. There is a lot of trees planted at a open area infront of the entrance. The watering system of the plantation is a cycle of collecting the rain water. All the trees planted in a planting box that stick to a piping system that lead in the rain water from the water tank. I love this building a lot because it's very cool even there's no fan or air-conditional in the public area. The reason of it is there is a lot of trees around it. This is also a light saving building. The car-park of this building have lesser built-in lightning system because they lead in the sunlight by making a vent block screen in the car-park that reduce the usage of lightning system.

B : DREAM SPACE FOR THE USER: ' A HIDEOUT '

This is the last project of the whole module. We were given few Character to choose as our client and create a hideout that fit our client. The character that i choose is Jackie Chan. First we need to do research from different aspect and collect all the information about our client then finalize what element fit in our client and how to arrange the space usage that fit our client. Then we need to transform all our ideas into design elements then into a final 3-D model. There's a limited space for us to build the hideout so we need to plan it wisely.

This assignment is hard but fun. It's a combination of all the past assignment. I learn how to assign the usage of place logically and also consider about the arrangement of space fit my client's characteristic. It's also the first time of making a 'house' model. I've seen a lot of those model around us like those contractor proposing their buildings to their client by using a small scale model. It's not easy to make a model in a small scale and those details in it. Our tutors help a lot during the whole tutorial time. Design is always not 100% because there's always things to be improve and changes. It's not easy to build a structure for the client that fit his activities, personality, interest and etc. Last but not least, construct and develop a building for client is not easy but it's fun.

DESIGN STUDIO : PROJECT 2

'A LIFE CAPSULE' - SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL SPACE

This second assignment is a group assignment. We need to build a one-to-one scale life capsule for our client. We have to choose a member in our group as the client. First we collect all the data from our client like body dimension, interest, personality, hobby, and also 'job'. Then we started to create a 24-hours life capsule based on what she wanted for her life capsule design.

Teamwork is very important in this assignment because it's not easy to build a one-to-one scale model. We need to separate the job wisely to ensure our progress go smooth. Our material for the life capsule is cardboard/box board, it is not a easy to deal with it. We were not allow to use any glue on our model then we learn a lot of different joining technique of model in this assignment. In the past assignment of any subject, we always use glue as the only choice or main choice for joining and now we have learn a lot of different joining technique that can apply in our future assignment model making. Cardboard has it's stripe/pattern that may cause difficult in cutting it and also cost of buying the board is in our consideration. Therefore we need to plan wisely before cutting the board to minimize the cost and maximize the usage. In addition, we can get to know more about our friend that be the client.

DESIGN STUDIO 1 : PROJECT 1

SELF-EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT 'REPRESENTING MYSELF'

This assignment required us to create a mask or a sculpture that can represent our-self. We need to identify our-self through personality, desire, interest and etc. and change it into design element to create the object. Color, shape, form and material are chosen carefully to suit the best self.

Throughout this assignment, we were able to understand our self more deeply when we identifying our self. Besides that we could also learn to transform a word into a design element and concept. We also learn to transform a abstract word to a 3-D design and model. This assignment also let us understand our friends more through their design and model.

D-COM PROJECT 3

FINISHING & PRESENTATION

This is the last assignment for this subject. This assignment is a assignment that combine with the other subject. We need to build our own hideout base on the character we choose then we need to draw the orthographic projection drawings about the hideout as the submission for this assignment. It's interesting that we design a hideout by our-self then we draw it out.

Before we design everything, we need to do a research based on the chosen character. Then we need to change all those theories, information into design element and space arrangement base on the personality, interest of our character. Lastly, we transfer everything into a 3-D hideout model. From ideas to Model, from words to drawings . It's fun to make theories into practical

There's always a limitation for everything. In this case, we were given a limitation of floor area. We need to have a good problem solving skills to think about how to fulfill the elements in to a limited space. Besides that we also need to have a creative and critical thinking to make the space more interesting and more suitable for the character we choose. Lastly, We need to think creatively by choosing the most interest part and draw it out by using orthographic projection.

D-com Project 2 A,B,C

ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION, AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION, PRESPECTIVES

In this assignment, we were given a chosen building which is The Farnsworth House. We were required to study it's original Plan, Elevations, Sections, Axonometric and perspectives. After we studied all the information, we need to draw it out based on the information we understand. This assignment required a lot of different skills to complete it.

Before we start the assignment, our tutors had teaches us how to draw each of the drawings and also show us examples. After that, we need to put those theories in to practice and started to draw it our by our-self. It's not a simple task but it's fun and interesting because it's not only learning theories but doing the practical task by our-self with the guild of tutors.

Think critically and creatively is also important in this assignment. The examples that tutors show to us and those information we found online may have differences with the actual buildings. So, here's where we need to solve the problems by our-self and produce a best workout that we can. We can't follow what exactly we found on the internet but need to think carefully before we start our work.

Everyone in the class will have different opinion or perspective, so it's important that for us to change our ideas and information with others to get a best conclusion/choice. As in the internet, we also need to adapt others opinion and perspective rather than just follow the owner/director itself. Collecting the opinion and perspective from different aspect will help us in making the best choice.

D-com Project 1 A,B

PROJECT ONE  : ON-SITE SKETCHING & TONAL VALUE

This assignment is to practice our sketching & hatching skill. For part A we have to choose four site in our campus to do a on-site sketching and for part B we were given a specific building/structure and sketching it out by using different technique of hatching skill. This assignment was able to train and show our sketching skill to our tutors.

During this assignment, we were able to put our understanding of hatching technique theory in to practical. This help us in train our practical skill rather than just understanding the theory teach by our tutors. other than that, we also can practice our skills of sketching that we learn from our tutors, books and etc.

Communication not only limited in verbal form. We can communicate with others by using our sketches. A good sketch can tell people about what we see and feel when we were at the site. Sketches is a communication tools between the people who draw and the people who see. By using sketches, we call let others know what we feel during our on-site sketching.

There's always problems occur when we doing something. Having a good problems solving skill is important. On-site sketching have problems that we need to face like weather, environment and etc. It's important for us to solve the problem and continue our job. Creative thinking is also important that we need to know how to choose a different angle to draw so that it can impress others.
